
One of the world's exceptional clarinetists, Paul Meyer has also built up an extensive career as a conductor. He has inaugurated the principal conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.
Meyer was born in Mulhouse, France in 1965. Following his debut performance at the age of 13 with the Orchestre Symphonique du Rhin, he went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire and at the Basler Musikhochschule. Winner of the French Young Musicians Competition in 1982 and of the prestigious USA Young Concert Artists Auditions in 1984, he went on to give debut concerts in New York and consequently met and became friends with the legendary Benny Goodman, whose influence and friendship played an important part in Paul Meyer's career and life.
A noted champion of new music for the clarinet, Meyer has given the world premieres of works by Gerd Kühr, Krzysztof Penderecki, and Luciano Berio.
Meyer has also served as a conductor for many major orchestras, including Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra and so on. In 2007, he inaugurated as Associate Principal Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2008, he also conducted Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra at Suntory Hall and its tickets were sold out.
In Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Meyer conducted the TKWO for the first time on the occasion of the First Composition Competition in November 2006 in Tokyo. He also recorded the required pieces of the 2009 All Japan Band Competition.
His recorded CDs have been sold on many labels such as the Denon, CBS, Erato, Sony, EMI, BMG, DGG. His recordings received numerous prizes (Diapason d'Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Stern by Monats Fonoforum, French Victoires de la Musique 99). Recently released: Milhaud's Concerto Works with Orchestre Philharmonique de Liege (BMG), and others. |
